Dead or Environmentally Friendly Grass

Dead or Environmentally Friendly Grass

Halloween grass is special and only grows one day of the year.

Dead grass

Assuming you have elected not to leave your grass to become a wild flower meadow, or a rough patch as a haven for wild life, there are still measures you can take to be environmentally friendly.

Green Watering Tips

  • Save water by selecting a tough grass mix including Rye, fine Fescues and other seeds.
  • If you must water do it thoroughly and evenly, early in the morning to avoid too much evaporation. Do not over water or water too frequently as this encourages surface roots and weak grass.
  • Use rain water caught in a water butt or grey water collected from your bath or shower.
  • Do not waste water in a drought, brown grass will recover when the rain comes.
  • Keep mower blades sharp, blunt blades rip the grass and make the lawn stressed so it needs more water and feed to recover.
  • To help reduce your carbon footprint do not use an electric or petrol mower but use brute force and get a push model which will also give you good stripes.
  • Keep the grass a bit longer than usual say up to 3″ long as this will shade roots and suppress weeds.
  • Unless grass is very long or cold and wet leave the clippings on the surface to act as a mulch.
  • Throw away the sprinkler and be mindful of any watering restrictions in drought conditions

Key Reasons to Water your Grass

  • Some types of slow release lawn feed and dry powder forms of moss killer require that the lawn is watered after application.
  • In order to bed new seed well into the soil after sowing  you may need to water the lawn well and keep an eye on the new seedlings until they can extract their own moisture..
  • After  raking, scarifying or aerating the lawn it is advisable that you water the lawn to allow the grass to recover properly.
