Orchid Tips and Photos
I am going to Madeira for a sunny break before the gardening gets tougher. I hope to sample the orchids that grow on the islands and even bring home the occasional example.
February and March are traditional months for UK based Orchid shows.
Look out for an exhibition or show near you.
Home Grown Tip
Learn a lesson from me! Orchid stems do not bend they break. This Phalaenopsis ‘moth orchid’ was producing a strong new stem after being in flower for 9 months on the old stem. When it was 5 inches long I thought I would train it to a cane for support as the number of flowers increased. That was not to be as my green fingers were too rough and I broke the stem.
Gone is my chance of producing a ‘Keikis’ or adventurous growth from the flower stem that could lead to propogating a new orchid. Keikis paste is a growth hormone that can be applied to stems to stimulate this sort of growth and is available from specialist suppliers (you do need a flower stem though).
At least I have a flower vase for the occasion and or a new corsage or button hole.
