Windswept Gardening Plant Selections

Windswept Gardening Plant Selections

Are you a windswept gardener who suffers from prevailing and random wind (in the garden I mean). Well here are some tips and plant selections to help make the most of your conditions. Your other suggestions would be welcome.

Initial Thoughts of the Windswept
(move home)

  • Screen a windy site with Trees and Shrubs then fill in with sturdy perennials.
  • Think of wind breaks when locating garden furniture or planning a new hedge.
  • Seaside gardens hint at some of the great garden features that you can incorporate into your windy garden.
  • Drought or water shortage often goes with a windswept garden so select plants that are also drought tolerant.
  • After planting give new additions some protection until they are established and water regularly until the roots grow. I put large pots, fleece barriers and even temporary trellis near new plants.

Selection of Trees

  • Mountain Ash or Rowan trees grow in some inhospitable places.
  • Conifers grow in high and windy space so try selected varieties of Spruce Picea that are targeted to get 60 feet high .
  • Opt for some Creeping Juniper horzontalis that only grow 1-2′.
  • Acer rubrum will turn red leaved in Autumn or Juniper virginiana will form an evergreen column.
  • Tilia cordata has been recommended to me but I have never grown it.

Selection of Perennials

  • Sea Holly Eryngium amethtstinium have sturdy stems that will stand up to anything.
  • Echinops globe thistles also do well in windy conditions.
  • Russian sage is a favorite addition to add fragrance to the garden before the scent gets blown away.
  • Daylilies,  Flax,  some Daisies, Marguerites and Coreopsis are good for infil.
  • Honeysuckle is the best climber for a wind spot.
  • Low growing plants such as Thrift, Violets and Nasturtiums will complement Shirley Poppies but avoid Oriental Poppies.

Quick Wind Tips

  • Stake your young trees and plants before they are blown out of shape.
  • Check your greenhouse is safe from glass being blown out.
  • Put loose equipment in a hut so it isn’t blown about.
