Orchid stems do not bend they break. This Phalaenopsis ‘moth orchid’ was producing a strong new stem after being in flower for 9 months on the old stem. When it was 5 inches long I thought I would train it to a cane for support as the number of flowers increased. That was not to be as my green fingers were too rough and I broke the stem.

Gone is my chance of producing a ‘Keikis’ or adventurous growth from the flower stem that could lead to propogating a new orchid. Keikis paste is a growth hormone that can be applied to stems to stimulate this sort of growth and is available from specialist suppliers (you do need a flower stem though).

At least I have a flower vase for the occasion and or a new corsage or button hole.

I am going to Madeira for a sunny break before the gardening gets tougher.
