It is no surprise that gardeners want to grow them in their gardens.<br \/>\nIn addition to the horticultural problems trees can cause damage that other plants do not.\u00c2\u00a0 Broken branches and flying debris can break glass or knock down fences, roots can damage drains, trees take up water from the soil leaving it prone to subsidence and, rarely trees cause damage to foundations .<\/p>\n<h2>How to Avoid Tree Damage.<\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li>Only plant trees where they are unlikely to cause direct damage or subsidence.<\/li>\n<li>Do not allow trees to overhang buildings.<\/li>\n<li>Plant trees 6 feet \u00c2\u00a0or 2 m \u00c2\u00a0\u00c2\u00a0away from boundary walls.<\/li>\n<li>Subsidence depends on many factors chiefly soil type, foundations, weather, and vegetation. Trees can increase the risk of subsidence because they take \u00c2\u00a0water up from the soil. Clay soils are often worst.<\/li>\n<li>Don\u00e2\u20ac\u2122t plant trees anywhere near overhead electricity lines or telephone wires.<\/li>\n<li>Ensure trees do not grow over greenhouses, conservatories or roofs.<\/li>\n<li>Prune dead wood to avoid or reduce branches breaking off.<\/li>\n<li>Keep the height of your trees below the distance to your buildings.<\/li>\n<li>Root damage to buildings is rare and subsidence is the more likely cause<\/li>\n<li>Leaking drains will get clogged up with tree roots (roots cannot get into sound unbroken drains). Maintain your drains.<!--more--><\/li>\n<li>Tree roots can lift or crack lightweight coverings like tarmac and block paving. Plant trees at least 2-3 m away, or use something loose and permeable like gravel.<\/li>\n<li>Trees can damage local environments by invading sensitive local habitats &#8211; for example, \u00c2\u00a0 sycamore, holm oak or Norway maple can migrate into nearby woods or other sensitive grassland habitats.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>Trees can be Damaged by Gardeners<\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li>Ordinary gardening can damage your trees, especially the roots, through  compaction, heat or misguidance<\/li>\n<li>Removing\u00c2\u00a0 or adding soil below trees can cause damage. Maintain the ground level.<\/li>\n<li>Covering the soil around roots with anything heavy\u00c2\u00a0 could suffocate them.
