The spicy fragrance and spidery flowers in yellow, orange or red\u00c2\u00a0 make it a must for the winter garden.<\/p>\n<h3>Where to Plant Witch Hazel<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>Do not plant young shrubs in a frost pocket even though plants are hardy.<\/li>\n<li>Witch Hazel like an open sunny position and need space to develop all be it slowly.<\/li>\n<li>Avoid exposed and windy positions.<\/li>\n<li>Clay soil needs improving with added humus and drainage.<\/li>\n<li>Acid or neutral soils are best but chlorotic yellow leaves can be treated and fed with chelated iron.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>On Going Cultivation<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>Water young plants during dry spells.<\/li>\n<li>Propagation is from budding to root stock. It is difficult to grow from cuttings.<\/li>\n<li>Witch Hazel needs little pruning provided there is room to let them grow freely to their full size.<\/li>\n<li>Prune out any dead or damaged wood and any congested, crossing or weak shoots.<\/li>\n<li>Remove suckers in autumn\u00c2\u00a0 as these will probably be from the rootstock plant.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>RHS Recommended Varieties<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong><em>H.<\/em> x <em>intermedia<\/em> \u00e2\u20ac\u02dcDiane\u00e2\u20ac\u2122 AGM:<\/strong> The finest red flowered witch hazel. It has a long flowering period throughout midwinter and is lightly scented. Height 2.5m (8ft). Spread 3m (10ft).<!--more--><br \/>\n<strong><em>H<\/em>. x <em>intermedia<\/em> \u00e2\u20ac\u02dcJelena\u00e2\u20ac\u2122 AGM:<\/strong> One of the best cultivars, unscented coppery orange flowers appear in early to mid-winter. Height 4m (13ft). Spread 4m (13ft).<br \/>\n<strong><em>H<\/em>. x <em>intermedia<\/em> &#8216;Pallida&#8217; AGM:<\/strong> Thought to be the best sulphur-yellow cultivar for garden use. Height 3m (10ft). Spread 4m (13ft).<br \/>\n<strong><em>H<\/em>. <em>mollis<\/em> \u00e2\u20ac\u02dcWisley Supreme\u00e2\u20ac\u2122:<\/strong> Flowering in January, it has a good scent and bright yellow flowers. Height 3m (10ft). Spread 3m (10ft).<br \/>\n<em><strong>H. virginiana<\/strong><\/em>: Bears yellow, scented flowers in mid-late autumn, rather than in winter. Height 4m (13ft).
