I try to grow a variety of perennials including Red Hot Pokers to give some tall plants chance to shine. As part of the lily family these Kniphofia are sometimes called Torch Lily.<\/p>\n<p>Red Hot Poker (Kniphofia) have flowered well this year and they throw up their well known spire of blossom in shades from deep red, orange, yellow and white even to a new greenish form (Kniphofia Green Jade).<\/p>\n<p><a title=\"Red Hot Poker by brianpettinger, on Flickr\" href=\"http:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/hortoris\/4830979756\/\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"http:\/\/farm5.staticflickr.com\/4140\/4830979756_ac201df49d.jpg\" alt=\"Red Hot Poker\" width=\"375\" height=\"500\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong>Growing Red Hot Pokers<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Red Hot Pokers have long sword like narrow leaves and the flowers can last in a vase for up to two weeks.<\/li>\n<li>The Kniphofia (Red Hot Poker or Torch Lily) needs abundant moisture during its growing period so good draining\u00c2\u00a0 soil rich in organic matter, is ideal.<\/li>\n<li>Red Hot Pokers need full sun to flower upto 4 feet tall in mid summer. Prune the spikes\u00c2\u00a0 after blooming.<\/li>\n<li>To propagate remove young plants from the edge of a clump\u00c2\u00a0 in spring or they can be grown from mixed <a href=\"http:\/\/www.awin1.com\/cread.php?awinmid=2283&amp;awinaffid=81944&amp;clickref=&amp;p=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.thompson-morgan.com\/plants1\/search.html?section=all&amp;search=kniphofia\">seeds from Thompson &amp; Morgan<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li>Provide adequate spacing to encourage clumping up as they may spread up to three feet.<\/li>\n<li>Although Red Hot Pokers are drought tolerant they will do better if they are given plenty of water during hot weather.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/gardenerstips.co.uk\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2008\/10\/white-hot-pokers.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-723\" title=\"white-hot-pokers\" src=\"https:\/\/gardenerstips.co.uk\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2008\/10\/white-hot-pokers-300x224.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"450\" height=\"336\" srcset=\"https:\/\/gardenerstips.co.uk\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2008\/10\/white-hot-pokers-300x224.jpg 300w, https:\/\/gardenerstips.co.uk\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2008\/10\/white-hot-pokers.jpg 448w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 450px) 100vw, 450px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: left;\">Growing White Hot Pokers<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>Kniphofia known as <strong>Red Hot Pokers <\/strong>come in a range of colours and I like the cream or white.<\/li>\n<li>This variety K. citrina is a stately lemon coloured spire of flower about 3 foot tall. They are good clump forming perennials with narrow strappy evergreen leaves.<\/li>\n<li>\u00c2\u00a0For other yellow flowers try Candelight, Little Maid (AGM) or Atlanta.<\/li>\n<li>The sword like, strappy leaves, clump together well.<\/li>\n<li>The plants look good when massed together in clumps.<\/li>\n<li>Pokers are generally hardy herbaceous perennials -try Kniphofia Citrina a 3 foot lemon colour or giant 6 foot Royal Castle.<\/li>\n<li>If space is limited Kniphofia hirsuta is 18 inches high and forms dense, tidy clumps. The flowers are <strong>good for cutting<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li>If the leaves are untidy in Autumn cut them down to half their height.<\/li>\n<li>Kniphofia combine well with many shrubs, grasses and Yuccas. They like well drained soil in a sunny position.<\/li>\n<li>White Hot Pokers can also look good in a Mediterranean gravel or paved area.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>AGM varieties to grow<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>Kniphofia \u00e2\u20ac\u02dcBrimstone\u00e2\u20ac\u2122 Slender spikes of golden-yellow from green buds.<\/li>\n<li>Kniphofia caulescens Coral-red, fading pale-yellow.<\/li>\n<li>Kniphofia galpinii Dainty spikes of very intense, rich orange<\/li>\n<li>Kniphofia \u00e2\u20ac\u02dcRoyal Standard\u00e2\u20ac\u2122 Deciduous. Bright yellow, scarlet in bud<\/li>\n<li>Kniphofia \u00e2\u20ac\u02dcToffee Nosed\u00e2\u20ac\u2122 Creamy-white tipped toffee-brown.<\/li>\n<li>Kniphofia \u00e2\u20ac\u02dcBee\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s Sunset\u00e2\u20ac\u2122 Deciduous. Soft yellowish-orange<\/li>\n<li>Kniphofia triangularis Free flowering.
