Are native weeds worse than alien invaders? First lets see what plants we are talking about<\/p>\n<h3>Invasive or Noxious Native Weeds under the Weeds Act 1959,<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Broadleaved Dock<\/strong> <span class=\"latin\">(Rumex obtusifolius)<\/span><\/li>\n<li><strong>Curled leaved Dock<\/strong> <span class=\"latin\">(Rumex crispus)<\/span><\/li>\n<li><strong>Spear Thistle<\/strong> <span class=\"latin\">(Circium vulgare)<\/span><\/li>\n<li><strong>Creeping Thistle<\/strong> <span class=\"latin\">(Circium arvensis<\/span><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.languard.co.uk\/invasive-weed-management\/ragwort\/\">Common Ragwort<\/a> <span class=\"latin\">(Senecio jacobaea)<\/span><\/li>\n<li><strong>Ragwort Control Act 2003<\/strong>\u00c2\u00a0 see <a href=\"http:\/\/www.defra.gov.uk\/farm\/wildlife\/weeds\/index.htm\">DEFRA\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s mini-site on Common Ragwort <\/a>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>I don&#8217;t know about you but there is a chance some of these weeds appear in my garden along with other miscreants such as willow herb (<em><span class=\"aCOpRe\">Chamaenerion angustifolium)<\/span><\/em> , ground elder, convolvulous and bluebells. And that is just the start of my weed trail.<\/p>\n<h3 id=\"restrictions\">Invasive non native alien plants<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>American <a href=\"https:\/\/gardenerstips.co.uk\/blog\/flowers\/skunk-cabbage-for-the-waterside\/\">skunk cabbage<\/a> Lysichiton americanus<\/li>\n<li>Chilean rhubarb \u00c2\u00a0\u00c2\u00a0\u00c2\u00a0\u00c2\u00a0 Gunnera tinctoria<\/li>\n<li>Curly waterweed \u00c2\u00a0\u00c2\u00a0\u00c2\u00a0\u00c2\u00a0 Lagarosiphon major<\/li>\n<li>Floating pennywort \u00c2\u00a0\u00c2\u00a0\u00c2\u00a0\u00c2\u00a0\u00c2\u00a0\u00c2\u00a0\u00c2\u00a0\u00c2\u00a0\u00c2\u00a0\u00c2\u00a0\u00c2\u00a0 Hydrocotyle ranunculoides<\/li>\n<li>Giant hogweed \u00c2\u00a0\u00c2\u00a0\u00c2\u00a0\u00c2\u00a0\u00c2\u00a0\u00c2\u00a0\u00c2\u00a0 Heracleum mantegazzianum<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Himalayan balsam \u00c2\u00a0 Impatiens glandulifera<\/li>\n<li>Nuttall\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s waterweed \u00c2\u00a0\u00c2\u00a0\u00c2\u00a0\u00c2\u00a0\u00c2\u00a0\u00c2\u00a0\u00c2\u00a0\u00c2\u00a0\u00c2\u00a0\u00c2\u00a0\u00c2\u00a0 Elodea nuttallii<\/li>\n<li>Parrot\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s feather \u00c2\u00a0\u00c2\u00a0\u00c2\u00a0\u00c2\u00a0\u00c2\u00a0\u00c2\u00a0\u00c2\u00a0 Myriophyllum aquaticum<\/li>\n<li>Japanese knotweed<\/li>\n<li>New Zealand pigmyweed<\/li>\n<li>List of aquatic weeds <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rhs.org.uk\/advice\/garden-health\/weeds\/Invasive-non-native-species\">RHS<\/a><\/li>\n<li>Plus an additional list of 30\u00c2\u00a0 less widely spread species <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/guidance\/invasive-non-native-alien-plant-species-rules-in-england-and-wales\">Government list<\/a><\/li>\n<li>With the above you must not do any of the following &#8211; import, keep, breed,transport, sell, grow, cultivate or permit to reproduce<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>Weed Worries<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>Lawn weeds are unsightly but are they worth loosing sleep over.<\/li>\n<li>Fat hen and bitter cress get everywhere and must leach some nutrient from soil and compete with more important plants but a limited amount of live and let live makes for a more peaceful existence.<\/li>\n<li>Dandelions are colourful and have interesting seed heads although it is their propensity for seed distribution that gets them on my weed list.<\/li>\n<li>It is the weeds that get in and amongst my more treasured specimen plants that give me angst. Horses tail have never inflicted me with their presence but it would concern me if I had to work an invaded garden<\/li>\n<li>Self sown rouges including buddliea, goat willow and odd trees can catch me out for one or two years but are big enough to get rid of.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Are weeds just plants &#8216;whose virtues have not yet been discovered&#8217;?
