They go for the soft new shoots and nascent flower stems which must be easy to get their teeth into. For some reason they have been quite selective on the plants they choose (As has been the spray I have used in a prophylactic manner). I hope the rest of the summer is black fly free but you never know.<\/p>\n<h3>Why are Black Fly Bad News<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li><span class=\"st\">Black fly aphids or thrips are common sap-sucking insects.\u00c2\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span class=\"st\">They are unsightly and look like they can do serious damage to plants.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span class=\"st\">As sap sucking insects they can create a lack of vigour and damage growth.<br \/>\n<\/span><\/li>\n<li>Insect secretions can go mouldy and add further problems to the dahlias<\/li>\n<li>In severe cases viruses can be transferred to plants by these insects.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter  wp-image-20218\" src=\"https:\/\/gardenerstips.co.uk\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/07\/pests-007-1024x768.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"642\" height=\"482\" srcset=\"https:\/\/gardenerstips.co.uk\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/07\/pests-007-1024x768.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/gardenerstips.co.uk\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/07\/pests-007-200x150.jpg 200w, https:\/\/gardenerstips.co.uk\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/07\/pests-007-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/gardenerstips.co.uk\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/07\/pests-007-768x576.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 642px) 100vw, 642px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Lulled into a false sense of security by the low level of greenfly around my garden I wasn&#8217;t expecting black fly. I only left my dahlias alone for a few days and the flies multiplied like rabbits. I am on a more frequent look out patrol now.
