Did I chose a difficult variety with &#8216;Marmande&#8217; which I now know is known for it&#8217;s different shape.<\/li>\n<li>After an early start my plants looked fine until sun shine caught me out. I needed to install greenhouse shading earlier but thought I could rectify and catch up OK.<\/li>\n<li>Many leaves curled turned brittle both for me and in my neighbors greenhouse.<\/li>\n<li>Water and feed was readily available but not in the right\u00c2\u00a0 way to avoid problems.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-19354\" src=\"https:\/\/gardenerstips.co.uk\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/07\/tomato-005-1024x768.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"640\" height=\"480\" srcset=\"https:\/\/gardenerstips.co.uk\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/07\/tomato-005-1024x768.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/gardenerstips.co.uk\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/07\/tomato-005-200x150.jpg 200w, https:\/\/gardenerstips.co.uk\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/07\/tomato-005-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/gardenerstips.co.uk\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/07\/tomato-005-768x576.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 640px) 100vw, 640px\" \/><\/p>\n<h3>Action Plan<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>I will settle for fewer plants and cull the worst culprits.<\/li>\n<li>I have increased the feed and seaweed nutrients.<\/li>\n<li>At the end of the season I will consider not growing these tomatoes again.<\/li>\n<li>Our local show has a category for misshaped vegetables &#8211; will this fruit be according to classification.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>Blossom End Rot<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>Too little calcium is the normal reason for this problem shown below. Avoid impatience.<\/li>\n<li>Inconsistent watering can create problems the most frequent being blossom end rot. Keep soil evenly moist. Ventilate well and water in the evening.<\/li>\n<li>Forgetting to pinch out side shoots on cordons cuts down on the size of crop.<\/li>\n<li>Tomatoes are heavy feeders &#8211; follow the instructions on a high potash, liquid\u00c2\u00a0 feed.<\/li>\n<li>Over crowding can reduce overall number of tomatoes<\/li>\n<li>Poor pollination can be helped by gently tapping open flowers and misting the plants.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Misshapen tomatoes are a bane this summer and the rot is really setting in early .
