I have loved carnations for over 60 years but never really got on top of growing or breeding for showing.<\/p>\n<h3>Carnations through the Ages<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>Dianthus caryophyllus have been around for over 2000 years well known to the ancient Greeks. Since that time they have been bred into a vast range of varieties.<\/li>\n<li>Standard Carnations are the large single headed varieties grown in a greenhouse environment.<\/li>\n<li>Hardy <strong>border carnations<\/strong> of the sort by family grew in their little cottage the 1950&#8217;s. Now overtaken by supermarket and garage forecourt sales of bunches in plastic.<\/li>\n<li>Vintage varieties\u00c2\u00a0 have been very popular in bridal bouquets for years<\/li>\n<li>Spray carnations have multiple flowers per head by removing the terminal bud and leave the side buds to flower.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Pinks<\/strong> have smaller flowers than carnations and either single or double.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.britishnationalcarnationsociety.co.uk\/#\/about-us\/4554028946\">The British National Carnation Society\u00c2\u00a0\u00c2\u00a0 <\/a>growing the flowers of the three main types of Dianthus \u00e2\u20ac\u201c Pinks, Border Carnations and Perpetual-flowering Carnations.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>&nbsp; Green fingers held this wet carnation still for a photograph of the captivating colour scheme.
