{"id":17224,"date":"2015-11-25T09:45:08","date_gmt":"2015-11-25T16:45:08","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/gardenerstips.co.uk\/blog\/?p=17224"},"modified":"2015-11-25T12:23:18","modified_gmt":"2015-11-25T19:23:18","slug":"cucumber-pests-and-problems","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/gardenerstips.co.uk\/blog\/gardening\/pests-problems\/cucumber-pests-and-problems\/","title":{"rendered":"Cucumber Pests and Problems"},"content":{"rendered":"<h4>Pests on Cucumbers<\/h4>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Red spider mite<\/strong> can be a problem in a greenhouse.<\/li>\n<li>Avoid hot dry conditions when they will thrive.<\/li>\n<li>Treatments include spraying with fatty acid, oils and soaps as an insecticide.<\/li>\n<li><strong>White fly<\/strong> and red spider mite may need a biological control of parasitic wasps or predatory mites respectively.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h4>Powdery Mildew<\/h4>\n<ul>\n<li>Powdery Mildew is the worst cucumber problem under glass badly affecting leaves<\/li>\n<li>Causes include Stressed plants by dry root conditions or high humidity.<\/li>\n<li>Excessive temperatures can create mildew.<\/li>\n<li>Use sulphur or fish oil fungicides and good husbandry.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h4>Other Problems<\/h4>\n<ul>\n<li>Water well and often but beware of rot on the roots. Soil should never be soggy<\/li>\n<li>All female varieties can be bitter and bloated if cross pollinated<\/li>\n<li>Do not grow Gherkins with cucumbers to Avoid cross pollination.<\/li>\n<li>Remove all male flowers without embryonic fruit at the base.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li>Avoid splashing the fruit when you water<\/li>\n<li>Do not let cucumbers rest on the ground. Put on a tile or flat stone for them to rest on to avoid damage and rot<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>For vine weevil I am willing to use chemical treatment like Amazon&#8217;s <a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.co.uk\/exec\/obidos\/ASIN\/B001DYLWU4\/richardpettin-21\">Pbi Provado Vine Weevil treatment<\/a>, if the squashing of the grubs is not good enough.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Pests on Cucumbers Red spider mite can be a problem in a greenhouse.
