{"id":17212,"date":"2015-11-25T02:19:25","date_gmt":"2015-11-25T09:19:25","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/gardenerstips.co.uk\/blog\/?p=17212"},"modified":"2024-02-12T10:49:09","modified_gmt":"2024-02-12T10:49:09","slug":"leek-and-onion-allium-problems","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/gardenerstips.co.uk\/blog\/gardening\/pests-problems\/leek-and-onion-allium-problems\/","title":{"rendered":"Leek and Onion &#8211; Allium  Problems"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2><a title=\"Leeks by brianpettinger, on Flickr\" href=\"http:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/hortoris\/5452951361\/\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/farm6.static.flickr.com\/5294\/5452951361_143290e1f9.jpg\" alt=\"Leeks\" width=\"500\" height=\"375\" \/><\/a><\/h2>\n<h2>Leek Moth<\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li>Will not affect ornamental alliums<\/li>\n<li>White or brown patches develop where leaves ahve been eaten by caterpillars.<\/li>\n<li>Larvae bore into bulbs or stems causing secondary rots.<\/li>\n<li>More prevalent near the coast where two generations in May and October can cause problems<\/li>\n<li>No effective insecticide for home gardeners<\/li>\n<li>Keep plants well watered in summer for strong growth<\/li>\n<li>In severe cases grow under fleece<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>Onion White Rot<\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li>Affects onions garlic shallots but less severe on leeks.<\/li>\n<li>Symptoms include yellow and wilting leaves<\/li>\n<li>Roots rot and leave mould and black sclerotia in the soil which can survive to cause problems for 8 years<\/li>\n<li>Plants become loose in the soil and start to go soft.<\/li>\n<li>Most severe in cool wet summers<\/li>\n<li>Transmitted by contaminated soil not airborne<\/li>\n<li>Control by destroying affected plants before sclerotia form.
