Where do gooseberries come from? Where else but on bushes did you ask?
My Gooseberries have whiskers on them but I won’t be feeding them to the cat. This early fruiting crop makes a tasty dessert too good for any feline.
Gooseberry Growing for Fun
- I am ‘Careless’ with names but that is probably what this variety is called. It can suffer from mildew if left short of water but that is not a problem this year.
- I have also bought ‘Greenfinch’ a disease-resistant variety that forms compact bushes. The early yields of bright green fruit are excellent for cooking as long as the bullfinches leave the flower buds alone.
- Long ago my brother in law gave me some bushes that have been re-purposed from cuttings to feed my side of the family. I think they were ‘Invicta’ .
- Six bushes provides me with plenty of pies and copious quantities for freezing.

Catering with Gooseberries
- No posh menu is complete without at least one product using Gooseberries.
- Careless – Gooseberry & Sloe Gin Jam is one of my favourite sounding products.
- As an alternative to pies and crumbles why not sweeten the gooseberries and cover with a sponge mixture.
- Gooseberry Fool is an expletive leveled at me on occassion.
