Growing Potatoes in Pots
If you have a small garden, but would like to grow some potatoes, try growing them in pots.
What you need for growing potatoes in pots:
- A large pot 30 cm in diameter.
- Fill the pot with suitable compose, leaving a few inches for earthing up later.
- Plant the potato seeds at the usual time. (early March)
- If grown in pots, they can be given a head start in a greenhouse for early flowering.
- Make sure there is suitable drainage, place crocks at the bottom of the pot to make sure the hole doesn’t get blocked.
- When the first shoots appear, add more compost to make sure that the growing potatoes are covered up. It is important to avoid potatoes being exposed to light as they will go green and become inedible.
- Ensure regular watering, especially as the potatoes are forming.
- Harvesting is easy, just empty the pot and collect the potatoes
